At Courtenay Dental Health and Implant Centre, we often get asked about dental crowns. Taking care of new dental crowns is easy, as long as you know what to do. With this in mind, we have written this easy guide to help you keep your new crowns looking as bright as the Las Vegas strip.

Brush Well

The best thing about crowns is that they can be cared for in the same way you would take care of your original teeth. Brush your teeth twice daily for at least two minutes in a circular motion.

Floss Daily

Just like a normal tooth, crowns are still susceptible to decay near the gum line if you let too much plaque build up. Make sure you floss daily, taking extra care in the first week not to aggravate gums that may still be tender from the initial procedure.

Avoid Sticky Foods

Newly installed crowns can be sensitive so avoid especially foods that might accidentally dislodge your crown. Common culprits include sticky caramels, chewy mints and other candies.

Shun Ice

While crowns are strong, they are still susceptible to cracks and fracture like normal teeth. Avoid crunching down on hard things like pens, hairpins, and hard candies. Stay away from chewing ice in particular, as the extreme temperature change significantly increases the risk of fracture in both porcelain crowns and natural teeth.
